"One-letter stock symbols are part of the 212-year-old NYSE's lore. Aiming to conserve wire space, telegraph operators once used single-letter symbols for the most active stocks. Now, eight of the alphabet's 26 letters aren't currently in use as NYSE symbols -- H, I, J, M, P, U, W and Z -- and the rest stand for companies that include such well-known names as Ford Motor Co., Gillette Co. and Kellogg Co."
